Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
Flexible vinyl plank flooring with a printed wood look. Glue-down versions sit tight to the floor, and click versions float over a pad.
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
LVT flooring uses the same construction cut as tiles, usually with a stone or concrete look, and is sometimes laid with grout lines.
SPC Flooring
A stone-plastic composite core makes the plank stiff, so it rides over small dips in the subfloor and clicks together quickly.
Sheet Vinyl
Comes off a roll in wide pieces, so a small room can have few seams or none.
Wear Layer and Underlay
The clear wear layer on top takes the scuffs from chair legs, toys, and pets. It is measured in mils, and a thicker layer lasts longer. Rigid-core planks often come with a pad attached, so ask before adding another underlay: a second layer can make the click joints flex.

Choosing Vinyl for Wet Rooms and Condos
Vinyl goes where spills happen: kitchens, laundry rooms, and mudrooms. Unlike most laminate, it has no wood-fibre core to swell, and it is one of the main waterproof flooring options. Over basement concrete, rigid-core planks float on their pad, and the pad takes some of the chill off the slab.
In a condo, ask for the floor's sound test results and compare them with your building's noise rules. Click vinyl flooring can often go over a flat existing hard floor. Glue-down vinyl needs a smooth, well-prepared subfloor, because every dip and seam underneath shows through the surface.

Is vinyl flooring waterproof?
Most vinyl planks are. Water can still run through the seams and around the edges to the subfloor, so spills should be wiped up and not left to sit.
What is the difference between SPC and luxury vinyl plank?
Standard luxury vinyl plank bends and is often glued down. SPC has a rigid core, clicks together over a pad, and feels firmer underfoot.
How thick should the wear layer be?
For bedrooms and other quiet rooms, 12 mil is plenty. Kitchens, entrances, and homes with large dogs do better with 20 mil or more.
Can vinyl go over tile?
Click vinyl often can, if the tile is flat and solid and the grout lines are shallow. Deep grout lines or uneven tile need levelling first, or the pattern can show through.
