What Sets One Laminate Apart from Another
Wear Rating
Laminate is rated from AC1 to AC5 for the foot traffic it can take. A busy hallway or kitchen needs a higher rating than a guest bedroom.
Water Resistance
Spill protection is stated in hours and differs a lot from one product to the next. Very few laminates are made for standing water.
Thickness and Core
Thicker planks with a dense fibreboard core feel more solid underfoot and sound less hollow when you walk on them.
Texture and Edges
Embossing that follows the printed grain looks closer to real wood, and bevelled edges set each plank apart from its neighbours.
Laminate Around Water
In a kitchen, choose a laminate with a long spill rating and wipe up water as it happens. Some laminates are approved for dry, finished basements, and many are not. Full bathrooms and laundry rooms, where water can pool, are better served by vinyl flooring or porcelain tile.

Installing and Looking After Laminate
Most laminate is a floating floor. The planks lock together over an underlay without being fastened to the subfloor, and a small gap at the walls lets the floor expand; baseboard or quarter-round covers it. Dips in the subfloor make the click joints flex and, over time, open.
For cleaning, sweep or vacuum up grit and use a damp, well-wrung mop. Wet mopping and steam cleaners can swell the edges of the planks.
Compared with hardwood, laminate resists scratches better and usually costs less, but it cannot be sanded and refinished. Compared with vinyl, it feels firmer underfoot, and vinyl copes better with water.

Is laminate waterproof?
A few products carry a waterproof rating, with conditions attached. Most laminate resists surface spills for a stated number of hours, and water left standing can still get into the joints.
What AC rating do I need?
AC3 covers the rooms of a typical house, kitchens and hallways included. Choose AC4 if the floor runs through a busy entrance or a home office with a rolling chair.
Do I need underlay under laminate?
Yes. Floating laminate sits on an underlay, either attached to the planks or laid separately. Over concrete, the underlay also needs a vapour barrier.
How do I fix a scratched laminate plank?
Small scratches can be filled with a colour-matched repair kit. A badly damaged plank can be replaced, which is easier if you keep a few spare planks from the same order.
