Getting the Size Right
Living Rooms
Pick a rug big enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it, so the seating sits together as one group.
Dining Rooms
The chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out, which usually means about 60 cm (24 in) of rug beyond the table edge on every side.
Bedrooms
A rug that reaches past both sides of the bed gives soft footing first thing in the morning. In a smaller room, a runner on each side does the same job.
Hallways
Measure the length and width, leave some bare floor along each side, and check that doors can swing over the runner.
Rug Pads and Everyday Care
A rug pad keeps the rug from sliding and protects the floor underneath. Vacuum regularly, turn the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly, and blot spills instead of rubbing them. For a deeper clean, we offer area rug cleaning for removable rugs.

Hand-Knotted Rugs
Tied knot by knot, usually in wool. The knot count, often given per square inch, is one measure of how fine the weave is, and a well-made rug can be cleaned and repaired for decades.
Synthetic Rugs
Usually polypropylene or nylon. They clean up easily and suit family rooms, basements, and homes with pets.
Runners
Sized for hallways, entries, and stairs, runners come in assorted available sizes. Stair runners leave the wood visible at both sides of each step.

Can I order a custom-size rug?
Yes. Bring the room measurements and any colour samples, and ask which sizes, shapes, and materials can be made.
Are wool or synthetic rugs better with pets?
Synthetic rugs are easier to clean after accidents. Wool hides everyday soil well but soaks up liquid, so spills need quick attention.
Can I put an area rug on carpet?
Yes. A low-pile or flat-woven rug sits best on carpet. Use a pad made for rugs on carpet so the rug does not creep or ripple.
How do I measure for a stair runner?
Measure one tread and riser, from the back of the tread over the nosing to the bottom of the riser, multiply by the number of steps, and add any landings. Note the stair width too; most stair runners leave about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) of wood showing on each side.
