Tile Types and Formats
Porcelain
Denser and less absorbent than ceramic, so it suits entrances, kitchens, basements, and wet areas.
Ceramic
Easier to cut and often less costly, with a wide range of colours and glazes for bathrooms and lighter-traffic rooms.
Large Format
Tiles 60 cm (24 in) and longer mean fewer grout lines, but they need a very flat subfloor.
Wood-Look Planks
Porcelain printed and textured like wood. A short offset between rows keeps long planks level with each other.
Slip Resistance and Grout
Polished tile turns slippery when wet. For entrances, kitchens, and bathrooms, choose a matte or textured finish and ask for its DCOF slip rating; a higher number means more grip. Grout in a matching colour blends the tiles into one surface, and a contrasting grout outlines each tile and shows the pattern.

A Flat Base and a Planned Layout
Before tile installation, the base is checked and prepared, because a floor that flexes will crack grout and tile. The layout puts the cut tiles at the edges of the room, away from doorways and the middle of the floor, and it plans the transitions where tile meets a lower floor next door.
Order all the tile for a room from one production lot, because the shade can shift from batch to batch. In basements and in homes with dogs, porcelain is a safe pick: water does not damage it, and claws rarely mark it.

Yes. Tile passes heat through well, and electric heating mats are set in the mortar under it. Decide on heating before installation, since the mat goes down first.
How do I clean porcelain tile?
Sweep or vacuum, then mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Most porcelain needs no sealing, but cement-based grout should be sealed to keep stains out.
How much extra tile should I order?
Usually about 10 percent more than the floor area, and more for diagonal or herringbone layouts, so there are spares for cuts and future repairs.
Can tile go over my existing floor?
Sometimes, over sound and well-bonded tile, if the added height works at the doors. Vinyl, laminate, and carpet have to come up first.
